Job DescriptionPolice Sergeant occupies the staff position assigned to the Police Lieutenant. Under general supervision, supervises Police Officers and other department employees in enforcement of local, state and federal laws. Supervises investigation and documentation of crimes and incidents. Documents and presents evidence; provides legal testimony. Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the Jeanne CleryDisclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Statistics Act (Clery Act.)

Essential Functions

  • Employee will demonstrate TSTC Core values of Excellence, Accountability, Service and Integrity with internal and external stakeholders, customers, students and members of the community.
  • Schedules and prioritizes work assignments for subordinates; authorizes overtime; provides on-the-job training; sets standards of quality and quantity for evaluation; supervises and evaluates the work of subordinates; handles minor disciplinary and performance problems; makes recommendations both for promotions and major disciplinary actions.
  • Interprets and applies departmental policies and procedures in routine as well as in unusual or difficult circumstances.
  • Responsible for accuracy and completeness of various official records and reports prepared by subordinates and/or other staff.
  • Engages in routine criminal law enforcement and crime prevention duties; Assists area law enforcement and other governmental agencies as needed.
  • Responds to scenes of emergencies, accidents, and crimes to assist and supervise.
  • Questions witnesses and suspects and takes statements and depositions. Handles more difficult complaints and problem.
  • Participates in or leads various investigations including robbery, burglary, sex crimes, and narcotics cases.
  • Writes various reports; maintains miscellaneous records and files; recommends material and equipment needs; performs essential duties/responsibilities from Job Descriptions of Subordinate Ranks; and performs other duties as needed or requested.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Texas State Technical College SOS's.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience/Knowledge/Skills

  • Must Have or Attain the Minimum Requirements of the Police Officer Position
  • Intermediate Texas Peace Officer Certification (TCOLE)
  • New Supervisors Course within 1 year of appointment
  • 1,000 TCOLE Approved Hours
  • FEMA ICS - 300 and 400 or attain within 1 year of appointment
  • Basic Instructors Proficiency Course or attain within 1 year of appointment
  • Field Training Officer (FTO) Course or attain within 1 year of appointment
  • Three (3) years of Concurrent TSTC Police Patrol Experience
  • Must have Proficient Knowledge of Criminal Laws and Local Ordinances
  • Skilled in the Use and Care of Firearms, Vehicles, and Other Common Police Equipment
  • Basic to Intermediate Computer Skills
  • Favorable Performance Evaluations Rating
  • Proficient in Supervisory and Administrative Skills, including Knowledge of Labor Law, Civil and other Liability Issues, Organizational Behavior, Motivation, Evaluation and Disciplinary Action
  • Working Knowledge of Modern Policing Issues, Philosophies, Practices and Trends applied within the College Environment preferred.
  • Perform Essential Duties/Responsibilities from Job Descriptions of Subordinate Ranks
  • Knowledge of First Aid; and the Ability to Gain Compliance with the Law in a Professional Manner
  • Skill in Completing Accident and Criminal Investigations
  • Ability to Supervise and Train Employees, to include Organizing, Prioritizing, and Scheduling Work Assignments
  • Strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  • Ability to Work Effectively with a Wide Range of Constituencies in a Diverse Community
  • Ability to Gather and Organize Legal Evidence
  • Ability to Provide Legal Depositions and Testimony
  • Knowledge of Organizational Structure, Work Flow, and Operating Procedures
  • Knowledge of Laws, Regulations, Methods, and Techniques in Area(s) of Specialty
  • This job description covers a position in which the percentage of time spent on the essential functions will vary based on the workload and will ultimately be determined by the supervisor.
  • Work is performed primarily within an office environment. When assigned duties are administrative, however, incumbent may occasionally experience outdoor weather conditions. May be required to work day or night on one of three shifts with varying days off. Work involves a degree of hazard.
